Moving? Organization is the key

Moving into a new home is an exciting time – but it can also be stressful. Whether you’re doing it yourself, asking friends for a little help or even hiring professionals, here is a simple guide to help you.

• Start early and research moving companies and/or truck rental companies.

• Hire a moving company or if you’re doing it yourself, reserve a moving truck. Be sure to get a written estimate and complete details. Remember, end of the month, weekends and holiday long weekends are especially busy times for movers and truck rental companies. Book in advance to ensure you get a moving truck for the day you need to move.

• This is the perfect time to spring clean – no sense moving what you don’t want. Go through your home thoroughly; determine what goes in the trash – and what comes with. Be ruthless. This is also the perfect time to hold a yard sale – one person’s rubbish may be another’s treasure!

• Make a list of items in your home that need extra attention e.g. computers, televisions, fine china, etc. You may, on the day, decide to move some of those items yourself – including important papers such as passports and perhaps jewellery.

• Order boxes and moving supplies – tape, markers, sheets of tissue and plain newsprint paper.

• Start packing ahead of time those items you do not use regularly. Clearly label or number your boxes to make unpacking easier.

• Make note of items of significant value for insurance purposes.

• Fill out a change of address form available from any Canada Post outlet.

• Don’t forget to inform service companies and institutions you do business with about your new address: banks; cable and phone; insurance; utilities; any subscriptions, etc.

After all major items and boxes have been delivered, conduct a quick check to ensure all is well.

While not intended to be a definitive list, this is merely a guide intended to start you off on the right foot!
